Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to find out the differences in the organisation and use
of residential space for privacy and for social interaction among families with adolescents
; with respect to family size and educational level of the household head in Oyo State.
The target population was all the families with adolescents in Oyo State, estimated
by the Local Government official to be 100,000. Purposive sampling technique was used
to survey 360 household heads with adolescents. A return rate of 100% resulted.
A researcher-designed questionnaire included questions in three sections:
demographic information, organization of residential space for privacy and use of
residencial space for social interaction. The items that elicited information on space
organization and space usage were of a 4-item modified Likert scale. Higher scores
indicate more egalitarian organization and usage, whereas lower scores indicate more
traditional organization and usage of residential space. The instrument was reviewed for
content validation by the researcher’s supervisors. It was pilot-testedfbr reliability.
Reliability alpha obtained was 0.91.
Data were collected by the researcher and trained research assistants. Data were
analysed using frequency distribution and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) on
SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The level of significance for
decision-making was 0.05%.
The study revealed the following findings
1. The hypothesis which states that "there is no significant difference in the
organization of residential space for privacy among small, medium and large
sized families with adolescents" was rejected.
2. The hypothesis which states that "there is no significant difference in the
organization of residential space for privacy among families with adolescents with
respect to educational level of the household head" was retained.

3. The hypothesis which states that "there is no significant difference in the use of
residential space for social interaction among small, medium and large sized
families with adolescents" was also retained.
4. The hypothesis which states that "there is no significant difference in the use of
residential space for social interaction among families with adolescents with
respect to educational level of the household head" was rejected.
The results showed that family size significantly influenced the organization of
residential space for privacy. The finding also revealed that educational level of the
household head does not. Family size does not significantly affect the use of residential
space for social interaction among families with adolesents. However, educational level
of the household head does.
The researcher concluded that families with adolescents have not satisfactorily
provided for the spatial needs of adolescents. They either share a room with younger
siblings or with other adolescents. They are restricted in some social activities. Until
spatial needs of adolescents are provided for at home should there be reduction in antisocial
activities. Recommendations were given for improved home-environment for the
adolescents, such as using partitioning devices, space-saving furniture and considering
the idea of home remodelling.
