Abstract
The study was designed to make a Comparative Study of Marriage Practices
Among Two Ethnic Groups of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area and Kaura Local
Government Area of Kaduna State. The two ethnic groups are Bajju and Kagaro
respectively.
The National Policy on Education 1981:15 (III) under the Primary Education
Section, emphasis that, "Government will conduct a documentation of the Social norms of
various communities and a distribution of the results through the Ministries of Education
and information. The study is therefore significant to education because marriage is part
of the social norms and values of the two ethnic groups in question. It constitute a basic
resource material for teaching and learning in Primary Schools with particular reference to
the area of study and the generality of the people. The study is equally significant to social
Studies Education, because, Social studies investigate the activities of man in all aspects of
his life as he engage in his daily activities of life. The marriage institution is one of these
activities engaged by man.
To achieve this purpose a total of three hundred and sixty (360) subjects were used
form among the married male and female randomly selected from the two ethnic groups of
the local governments in question. The data obtained were analyzed with percentages,
descriptive statistical procedure, t-test statistic and f-test statistics, all with the help of a
computer. The analysis of data revealed the following:
i. There is no significant difference between the marriage practices of the
Bajju and those of the Kagoro
ii. There is no significant difference between the perception of the Bajju male
and female with those of the Kagoro on the involvement of
parents/relations of the spouses in contracting marriage,
iii. There is significant difference in the search for a wife for the man between
the age groups of the two ethnic groups,
iv. There is no significant difference in the rate of bride-price between the
various levels of Educational attainment;
v. There is no significant difference between the roles and responsibilities of
the Bajju man and woman over those of the Kagoro man and woman in
marriage.
In a verbal conversation with some of the respondents, it was discovered that,
although some of the married male and females were aware that certain procedures are
followed before marriage is regarded as legal, especially the payment of bride-wealth
Some were very much ignorant of the fact that bride-wealth payment -
i. signifies the willingness of the parents of the girl approving the relationship
and demonstrating there willingness to give out their daughter to the man;
ii. attaches the children of the marriage to the man even if the marriage is
dissolved;
iii. gives the man legal right over the woman and her property; and
iv. gives the spouses right to assume new roles such as sexual relationship.
On the basis of the findings, it was recommended that the state ministry of
education should extend the teaching of social studies to the senior secondary school level
to enable the young and growing generation inculcate the significance of these
procedures and the expectations of the marriage institution before they are ready
to go into marriage contraction.
