dc.description.abstract | Abstract This study investigated digital preservation policy and implementation strategies in National Information Centres in Nigeria. To achieve the objectives of the study, the study formulated eight research questions. A qualitative research methodology using the case approach was adopted. Documentary sources, semi-structured questionnaire, tape recorder and Interview were the instruments used to collect data. The responses from the sampled staff of the National Information Centres were studied analyzed descriptively, using tables. The finding showed that National Information Centers surveyed collected different types of material for digitization and archiving. The most popular storage media for archiving of digital objects by the institutions studied was the Hard Drive, and CD-ROM. Adobe PDF file format was the most popular file format used to archive digital object. Digital objects created in different file format are converted to PDF file format for digital preservation. The level of awareness of the problems surrounding digital preservation is very low especially among the national information centres. There are no national or international standard digital preservation policy and implementation strategies adopted by Nigerian national information centres. National Library of Nigeria and National Bureau of Statistics have developed their own digital preservation without any clear strategy for the implementation of this policy. The challenges resulting in the partial implementation of the digital preservation policy at the National library include: lack of awareness of challenges surrounding digital preservation by the staff, lack of funds, lack of skilled manpower, lack of equipment and inadequate metadata of digital objects for preservation, all of which were recorded by the National information centres. The viii findings also showed that the structures put in place for implementing strategies for digital preservation was inadequate. The study therefore concluded that some level of digital preservation activities is being done at the National information centres. However, this is done haphazardly because of lack of a standard national digital preservation policy and implementation strategies in Nigeria. In view of this a number of recommendations were made including providing a model digital preservation policy and implementation strategies that is holistic in approach and which will a long way to help preserve digital information for long-term re-use. | en_US |
