Abstract
This study titled "Parental Preference of Secondary Schools for
their children in Kaduna State" is aimed at identifying possible
factors that affect the choice of secondary schools by parents
for their children. The researcher felt that there were some
change in attitudes of most parents towards the choice of schools
their children would attend. Such changes could be due to the
parents socio-economic background, educational experience,
academic performance of the schools/students, staff quality and
quantity, school quality, funding of the schools, religious
background and heritage.
A set of questionnaire was used to collect data for the
study and the parents responded to the items of the
questionnaire. These responses were converted to raw scores and
percentages were used in analysing the data collected. The Fratio
(ANOVA) test was used to test the hypotheses.
The findings of this study bordered mainly on the fact that
most of the choices of schools made by parents for their children
were closely related to their socio-economic background/class and
status, academic performance of the school students/staff quality
and quantity, general school quality, funding of the schools, and
other unclassified reasons like political reasons, physical
disabilities, school location and even heritage (this is where
a child had to go to a school because his/her father/mother went
to such a school). Again co-educational and single sex schools,
vii
science and Arts schools and Urban and Rural schools could be
likely factors for parents choices for schools.
Base on the above findings, it is the duty of the government
and every individual involved in the educational system to make
sure that the system is functional. Teachers should be employed
on merit and should be given on-the-job training with materials
necessary for effective teaching-learning process. Schools should
be located nearest to the communities to reduce the cost of
educating a child. Finally, school fees should be revised
regularly to avoid unnecessary charging of high fees.
