dc.description.abstract"Leadership Stylos and Effectiveness of Departmental Heads in Ahmadu Bello University Library Complex." The study was intended to identify the leadership styles exercised by the departmental heads in Ahmadu Bello University Library complex with a view to determining how such leadership styles affect subordinate staff's performance. Sixteen departments in the Ahmadu Bello University complex constituted the population of the investigation. The investigation was carried out by means of a Leadership Style Description Questionnaire. According to the analyses of the investigation, the null hypothesis:. "There is no significant difference in the way library administrators (departmental heads), perceive their leadership styles from the way their subordinate staff perceive these styles," was nob rejected. That is to say that, both the departmental heads and the subordinate staff indicated that the predominantly exercised leadership style was autocratic (authoritarian). Again, when staff performance (scores from section (d) of the LSDQ), and the exercised leadership styles were put on a correlation test, it was discovered that there was a strong correlation. This was an indication that siiaff performance was related to the leadership style exercised by the departmental heads. This revealed that with the well trained staff" in an organizational environment like theone in Ahmadu Bello University library complex, democratic leadership style was performed. In the light of the findings, the researcher, therefore recommended an intensive inservice training for librarians in administrative leadership, as well as periodic subordinate evaluation of their departmental heads' behaviour. It is very much hoped that the findings of the present study will be of great help to library administrators not only in Nigeria but in other African countren_US
