Abstract
This thesis is a critical edition; translation and commentary of Shaykh Uthman b. fodio"s work Irshad al Ummah ila Taysir al Milluh. The author offered an exhaustive discussion on the L-ase of Islam in three issues, which are: practical worship. Juristic verdict and judicial ruling. The author criticized Taqlid. which is strict adherence and partisanship to one school of law in the above three issues of the religion, arguing that there is no any injunction in the Quran or in the Sunnah. no any authentic report from the leading scholars, enforcing a particular school of law to be followed by all muslims. noting that a muslim is free to follow any school of his wish and there is no any interdiction in that. The researcher believes that the decadence and stagnation of the Muslim Ummah today in Nigeria pertaining learning and religious practice are consequences of the relegation and total disregard of the ideals taught by the Sokoto Jihad leaders (such as Shaykh Uthman b. fodio) in their literary works. The above, according to the researcher, necessitate the need of the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria for the study of the Sokoto Jihad literature, in particular Shaykh Uthman's writings, for their relevance and applicability to our contemporary situation. This is confirmed in the reports of previous researches conducted on various issues of academic significance in pursuance of various levels of degrees in the country. The book, Irshad al Ummah ila Taysir al Millah, is chosen for this study for its contribution to the subject matter highlighted above Literatures related to the content of the book which includes a study of the Shaykh's biography and his view of the concept of Taqlid and the schools of law were reviewed. A textual edition, translation and commentary of the hook is conducted The process and procedure for editing Arabic manuscripts was followed. An edited Arabic text of the book is produced from three different manuscripts. The research questions have been answered.
