| dc.description.abstract | A society is divided into the public and private realms. The Private controlled sector is further divided into profit and non-profit making parts. Non-Government Organizations, (NGOS), which this research dwells on belong to the latter part. Wherever they exist Non-Governmental Organizations, are products of self help efforts, geared towards the alleviation or eradication of a particular problem in a social system. They have been part of societal development problem in a social system. They have been part of societal development strategies right from the very time men consented to live under the famous "Social Contract". In the past as well as in the present NGOS in Western countries have enjoyed considerable success, especially in the last three decades and it is now accepted they have an effective role to play in the field of development co-operation. These Omnipresent representatives of civil society are engaged in a variety of activities to combat poverty including emergency aid, financing of development programmes, sending volunteers into the field, development education and lobbying. Given the breadth of their operations NGOS have given a lot of thought, as too what their role ought to be. This work is important for three reasons. First the work proposes to deal with an area on which very little work has been done at a comprehensive level. Second the work hopes to measure the linkages between the proliferation of NGOS in Nigeria and their claims to be Vanguard of grassroots development; Thirdly, the work hopes to evaluate the motivations behind this proliferation. The work further assesses the operational styles of these organizations and then terminates with recommendations to guide future predictions and policies in the area of study. | en_US |
