Abstract
The purpose of this study on job satisfaction and teacher
performance is to find out whether there is job dissatisfaction
among State and Federal teacher educators, and the effects of
job dissatisfaction on teacher performance in Plateau State.
It appears to the investigator that the Federal teachers
deployed to the State for the purpose of training teachers
for the U.P.E. Scheme are not satisfied with their conditions
of service in the State. The State teacher educators on the
other hand appear to be satisfied, with their jobs and to be
enjoying better conditions of service than their Federal
counterparts. This unequal treatment of the two groups of
teachers appears to be affecting the behaviour of Federal
teachers in that State.
Three types of questionnaire were used to collect data.
The first type was given to teacher educators and it contained
questions on conditions of service and job satisfaction.
The second and third types were given to students and school
administrators respectively for the rating of teacher
performance. The responses collected were converted to raw
scores and the means of the scores were calculated. The
iii
test of significance was used to compare the mean scores of
State and Federal teacher educators.
The hypotheses formulated were tested. The first
hypothesis that job satisfaction is higher for State than
for the Federal teachers was tested and found to be true.
The second hypothesis that job dissatisfaction is related to
the retention of Federal teachers was also accepted. The last
hypothesis that there is no difference in the performance of
State and Federal teachers was rejected. It was found that
Federal teachers have higher performance than State teachers.
It is believed that dissatisfied teachers are not necessarily
less productive than satisfied workers.
Salary, prompt confirmation of appointment to deserving
teachers, promotion, appointment of administrative posts and
other socio-emotional rewards are very important factors in
the compensation structure of any institution. These rewards
if not carefully distributed according to performance can
cause job dissatisfaction among the teachers. Job dissatisfaction
can also affect the performance of teachers. It is
important that rewards and sanctions should be distributed
according to performance in order to support compliance to the
organisation's rules and regulations and by so doing the
teachers will improve their productivity.
