Abstract
This work sets out to investigate the effects of SAP on the activities of commercial banks in Nigeria. It tested the hypothesis that the expectation of the government to influence levels of inflation, productivity, growth and development through monetary policies on the commercial banks has not materialised. It needs be noted, however, that policies were also targetted towards the commercial banks in the early 1960s up to mid-1986 before the introduction of the SAP. The study, therefore, compared the economic activities of the commercial banks in the pre-SAP era (1980-1985) with those of the SAP period (1986-1989). This is meant to determine whether the policies in the SAP era have actually resulted in solving the national economic problems that those in the pre-SAP era could not solve. The method used for the analysis was to take four of the major banks: First Bank, UBA, Union Bank and IBWA (AFRIBANK).
