Abstract
Bello, Fatimah B., Ceramic Techniques for postprimary
Institutions in Kaduna State. Master of Arts
thesis in Industrial Design, Ahmadu Bello University
Zaria 1987. There are 18 tables, 17 figures, 12
plates, 2 graphs and 2 maps.
Clay is a highly fluid and malleable material
with a life of its own. potters use it to produce household
utencils or works of art that attract the public,
not only by the shape they produce or by the beautiful glaze
on the pieces, but by clay quality itself. It is with
this concept in mind and being an art teacher myself, that
the researcher decided to investigate the teaching
of ceramic techniques for post-primary institutions in
Kaduna State. The purpose of the study is to identify
the problems involved in the teaching of pottery
techniques in post primary institutions in Kaduna State
. and to make recommendations for improvement based on
these findings.
The background, significance of the study and the
procedures used in collecting and analyzing data are
reflected in chapter one. Chapter two surveys
related literature as regards its history, the syllabus,
detailed construction techniques, decoration and tools,
finishing and firing. In chapter three, under
methodology, sample selection, instrumentation,
procedures followed, compilation of data and
analysis and limitations were also discussed.
Chapter four offers the study's findings
and chapter five summarises and gives the conclusions
and recommendations.
The data for this study was obtained from
responses to questionnaires based on frequencies
of the individual respondents. Where there are
questions that required free responses but could not
be categorised, respondents with similar opinions were
grouped together rather than tabulating frequencies
Questionnaires were administered and randomly sampled
to senior year students and art teachers.
In the questionnaires, a general background
information about the respondents was included
concerning their professional and academic qualifications.
There was also a set of oral interview question for the
local craftsmen potter which also includes the background
information, production, marketing experience and
general questions on pottery. This was to give
information that could help in the teaching of pottery
techniques in post-primary institutions. The interview
wan generalized because the responses were very few.
The researcher gave 936 questionnaires to both the
students and art teachers in post primary
institutions from the chosen zones. A seventy-five
per cent return rate was recorded. Based on the
analyses from respondents, the following conclusions
relating to the teaching of ceramic techniques for
post-primary educational institutions in Kaduna
State were deduced.
1. That there are more male art teachers than
female and that the number of art teachers
that responded are very few.
2. Most of the schools do not have a standard
art studio. They do their art lessons in
their classrooms.
3. The time allocated for the teaching of art
is not enough, especially when teaching the
three dimensional art.
4. That the students are generally interested
in art but the teachers do not use their
initiative and skills to motivate their
interest.
5. There is no art and craft club existing in
most of the schools and colleges.
6. That there are not enough ceramic tools and
equipment available in the schools and
colleges. Most of the art teachers and are
