Abstract
This study was designed to find out the causes, effects
and management of stress and anxiety among the undergraduate
students of A.B.U., Zaria. Sources of stress and anxiety are
issues that are intricately related to university life because
of its peculiar nature and these may have serious consequences
on the lives of undergraduate students.
Three faculties have been used as samples in the study.
From these faculties 347 and 210 students and academic staff
have been used respectively as subjects.
Two sets of validated questionnaire were used to gather
the data analysed for the study. Four pairs of hypotheses
were formulated on the causes, degree of seriousness (the rating
of causes, the effects and the coping strategies. The focus
of the hypotheses was to identify gender differentials among
students and academic staff.
The main statistical tool applied for testing the hypotheses
was the t-test. It was found out that the students and the
academic staff did not differ significantly except on the hypotheses
which states that "There will be no significant difference between
the male and female students as to the preferred coping strategies
when they are under stress and anxiety", It was found that the
t-value of -3.00 is greater than the critical value of ± 1.96 at
p 0.05 hence the hypothesis was rejected.
The results of the, study can be summarised as follows.
(i) The students and academic staff of Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria could identify the causes of
stress and anxiety among the undergraduate students,
(ii) They rated the degree of seriousness of the
identified causes as either extremely serious or
serious,
(iii) They agreed that students experience various
effects of stress and anxiety,
(iv) The preferred coping strategies in the events of
stress and anxiety were also identified by the
students and academic staff.
Based on the findings therefore, the researcher made
the following recommendations.
jt is recommended that the university should have
functional counselling units, at least one in each faculty
which should be well Staffed with professional counsellors. Such
counselling units should develop appropriate seminar/Workshop
materials on the causes, effects and management of stress and
anxiety. Such counselling units should also hold regular workshops
for and with university officials who usually have the first contact
with the students on arrival on the campus. The university
counselling units can also develop some counselling written materials
on "negative" coping strategies such as Indect coping strategies
like smoking, drinking, prostituting and use of drugs to highlight
the ineffectiveness of such strategies and such materials should
be made available for students' reading during orientation and
counselling sessions.
