Abstract
The study analyzed and compared sports management practices in tertiary institutions in
Nigeria. To achieve this purpose, a total of 170 subjects were randomly selected from
sports units in the tertiary institutions in six-geopolitical zones of the country. A self
developed, validated and pilot-tested questionnaire was used to collect the data. The
questionnaire contained two sections A and B. section A contained demographic
characteristics information of five (5) variables and section B contained eighty (80)
statements on sports management practices in tertiary institutions in Nigeria under ten (10)
different sub-sections. The subsections are (1) Finance (2) personnel (3) athletes
recruitment (4) sports facilities (5) sports equipment (6) organizational structure (7) sports
policies (8) athletes motivation (9) student participation and (10) public relations services
with eight (8) Statements each. The questionnaire was administered on 170s subjects
including Director of Sports/Sport Officer, Deputy Director of sports, Sports Coordinator,
Chief Coach, Senior Coach, and Coach I from 34 tertiary institutions in five geopolitical
zones of the country. The data collected were statistically analyzed using one way analysis
of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc the level of significance (LSD) difference at 0.05 .was
used to retain or reject the hypotheses drawn and tested The findings of this study were as
follows. The finding of this study revealed similarity among the three categories of tertiary
institutions in their financial management practices [f (2,172) =2.60(P>0.05)].. The finding
of this study showed that personnel management practices were found to be better in the
universities than other tertiary institution [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)].The finding of this study
showed that athletes recruitment management practices were found to be better in the
universities than other tertiary institutions [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)] The finding of the study
revealed that facilities management practices were found to be better in the universities
compared to colleges of education and polytechnics [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)]. The finding
showed that equipment management practices were found to be better in the universities
than other tertiary institutions [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)].. The study found that the
organizational management practices of sports were better in the universities compared to
colleges of education and polytechnics [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)] The study found that a
policy management practices were better in the universities and polytechnics compared to
the colleges of education [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)] The study found that athletes motivation
management practices were better in the universities and polytechnics compared to the
colleges of education [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)] The study revealed that the students
participation in sports management practices were better in the universities compared to
colleges of education and polytechnics [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)]. The study found that the
public relations services management practices were better in the universities compared to
colleges of education and polytechnics [f(2,172)=2.60(P<0.05)}Based on the findings of
the study the following recommendations are made .All tertiary institutions should fund
sports adequately .The practices in the management of personnel in Nigerian universities
should be operated in other tertiary institutions. The practices in the management of
athletes recruitment in universities should be adopted in other tertiary institutions Other
tertiary institutions should apply the practices of the universities in the management of
sports facilities. Attempt should be made for management practices of maintenance of
sports equipment in polytechnics and colleges of education should be improved.
organization management practices should be streamlined by the national colleges of
education commission (NCCE ) so that such practices should be common to all colleges of
education and become more efficient. Nigerian Colleges of Education should formulate and
implement appropriate policy for the successful organization of their sports programme.
Nigerian Colleges of Education should provide adequate appropriate and sources of
motivation for the students to participate in sports programme. Nigerian Colleges of
Education and Polytechnics should involve the individual of students in the decision
making process relating to the organization of sports to ensure greater participation of
students in sports. Nigerian Polytechnics and Colleges of Education should involve the
other organization in the successful formation and implementation of sports programme.
