Abstract
The study sought to identify, compare and analyze
students and teachers perceptions of the extent of
relationship between students and teachers on Islamic
studies curriculum and their achievement in examination;
the students perception on the Islamic ideals and the
qualities of the teacher's personality; and what degree the
educational climate for students learning was provided.
To carry out this investigation, two sets of
questionnaires were used for students offering Islamic
studies and the teachers of Islamic studies. The
questionnaires were used in obtaining data from a sample of
1322 students and 37 teachers. The student's academic
records were also used in collecting data pertaining to the
students results for Junior Secondary School (JSSE) and
West African Examination Council (WAEC),of 1993,1994 and
1995 respectively. The data collected with these
instruments were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The
analysis were based on the data based on the 3. research
questions.
The findings of the study showed that to some extent
there is relationship between students perception on the
values of the curriculum and their achievement in the
examinations. Similarly, the findings revealed that in some
of the schools the relationship between students
perceptions on the curriculum and their achievements in
examinations is not strong. The schools that perform well
in their examinations were found out to have a high
coverage of the syllabus. This is also related to the
personality of the teacher which has been confirmed to be
a reflection of the Islamic ideals, and where the
personality contradicts these ideals teaching does not take
place effectively. It was also confirmed that the ideal
school climate for the teaching of Islamic studies does not
exist in most of the schools. The school plays a
fundamental role in grooming the child for future life,
therefore, it is identified as the most important agent for
change.
It was concluded that the success of the
implementation of Islamic studies curriculum in Taraba
State depends on the adequate coverage of the syllabus.
This is attained through the provision of qualified and
committed teachers. Based on the findings of the study some
suggestions and recommendations were made.
