Abstract
The researcher attempted to conduct a follow-up study
to find out from the students, Guidance and Career Masters
their feelings, attitudes and opinions concerning the introduction
of the new system of comprehensive education in the
North Central State past primary institutions. Five Secondary
schools in Zaria district were selected for the purposes of
the study. This system was introduced in 1972. The first
class of students una took the TEDRO Aptitude tests at the
end of their second year course are now in farm five. The
research project was intended to determine the usefulness of
these tests with regards to the students' placement and vocational
choice. It was also the intention to find out from the
present form five students in the selected schools whether or
not they are satisfied with their placements, which were based
primarily on the TEDRO Aptitude test scores; and finally to
determine whether or not the new scheme of the comprehensive
education is welcomed by both the staff and the students.
Three hypotheses were postulated and tested. The first
one is not accepted because there is a pattern of correlation
between the Aptitude test scores and the end of-yearexamination
marks; whereas the second one is rejected, as
not all the students welcome the new system of education-
The third hypothesis is also accepted in that the majority
of the students seemed to be satisfied with their present
school placements.
In order to test the three hypotheses students
academic records were scrutinized individually and both
the TEDRO Aptitude test scores and the end of-year-examination
marks in English, Mathematics and Science were recorded and
tabulated for comparative purposes. To test hypotheses two
and three both students and staff opinionnaires and
questionnaires were designed to elicit their opinions with
regard to the new scheme.
The information obtained from the opinionnaires,
records, questionnaires, as well as the one obtained from
discussions with both staff and students was used to test
the hypotheses, and to draw the conclusions and recommendations.
It was generally found that the TEDRO Aptitude tests do
measure the students capacity and ability to learn, and that
they can assist students in their choice of vocation and
school placements - The test scores ore good indicators of
special aptitude, provided that the individual student has
had some opportunities for learning and motivation to learn.
More research is needed to investigate and evaluate the
validity and the usefulness of the TEDRO Aptitude tests union
are being conducted in the North Central State post primary
institutions.
