Abstract
The Jos Metropolis is not free from the hurdles of mobility such as inadequate transportation system, high fare structure, poor road characteristics. accidents and congestion. The time wasted in the course of undertaking a trip within activity centres does not only result to economic loss at work but also reduces the time that could be spent in shopping, recreation and other activities. The aim of this study is to make recommendations for achieving an efficient transportation system in Jos Urban Area. The primary data collected include volumetric traffic counts on the major roads as well as inter-zonal movements. The secondary sources of data collected include the Jos Master Plan, Government Statistical Records. Maps. Published and Unpublished Materials. The main transportation problems identifies are poor road network connectivity and absence of mass transit. Others are traffic delays on major roads ar peak periods, inefficient transportation system, poor traffic management scheme and relatively high transport fares, where in the problems are felt much more by the low income class. The study therefore concludes that an effective transportation system in Jos urban area, demands the adoption of an efficient mass transit system.
