B.A. ART EDUCATION
Music predominates and performs speci fic roles in
the daily activities of Moro' a people. It integrates with
almost all the cultural , aesthetic, political , economic
social, psychological, emotional and physiological aspect of
their lives. Music is not just seen as an enjoyable pursuit,
it helps in the continuity of tradition, because all musical
types played in all societies have tradition which governs
its modes and performance.
Therefore, the role of music is obvious in peoples
lives, philosophers and other people have recognised and
paid tribute to the potent influence of music and human
ideals, emotions and behaviours. People use music to
express their attitudes to life, their hopes, fears, thoughts
and beliefs. The impact of music is generally seen and felt
most, than any other art because it generates responses
before the intended meaning is understood, it moves the
mind and soul directly.
The Moro'a a philosophy of l i f e i s always manifested
in musical activities. Music is a constant companion in
social activities both for expressing sorrow and kappines.
Songs are used at all times and are seasonal. They are
particularly used to mark the
geographical variations of the year. Music has
v i i i
continued to play a prominent role in most of
the cul tural ac tivi ties of the Moro'a people '•
Unfor tunately, today, the si tuat ion has changed.
Music i s no longer used as a means of teaching
the young, correc tive measure in people 's wrong
doing, knowing the past etc.
These roles were fel t more be fore the coming of
the Chri stian mi ssionaries. When they came , they
adopted a hos ti le atti tude to African art , music and al l
various forms of cul tural activi ties. Thei r atti tude s
affec ted the nations cul ture particularly the Mo ro1a
cul tural activi ties.
Since then, ef fort s are being geared towards
reviving the cul ture of the count ry by the Nigerian
government . The Moro'a people too, have been working
towards cul tural revival . One of the ways in which the
society i s preserving Moro1 a cul ture i s that a day has
been se t aside as an annual event for the celebration of
Moro'a cul tural day. The day i s special ly kept and
observed by everybody to bring to l i fe the peoples pas t.
The purpose of thi s re search there fore, i s to
investigate and document the various types of
music and thei r role in Moro'a cul ture, the extent
to which
ix
music has helped in boosting the activi ties of
cul ture. I s' music s ti l l playing that role for which
which i t i s known? Al so, the study wi l l investigate
and document the various cul tural activi ties and
to offer suggestions on the promotion and revived
of these activi ties.
There fore, information for the study was col lected
from primary and secondary sources through personal
interaction, observation of musicians pe rformed l i fe,
recording of music types and photo graphs of
performances taken. Al so information was col lected
from two set of s tructured ques tionnai re and interview
schedules wi th elders, those participating in various
cul tural activi ties musicians and dancer s.
Information col lected was analysed and
reported in tabular form. Data i s presented in
summary stati s tics, that i s pre senting the average
response or
the numbe r and percentage of persons choosing a
particular re sponse di rec tly into the reproduction
of the ques tionnai re.
Cul tural activi ties are facing the ri sk of
dying out i f proper steps are not taken to aver t
the si tuation, importantly as they are. We learn
about
the past from them and so the need to preserve the skills,
values and all our cultural activities is necessary. This
preservation can only be done by giving the people of this
great country proper cultural education and
