Abstract
THE R0LE OF MUSIC IN EDUCATING YOUTHS INMORO1A CULTURE BY NKOM ROSE AYAKA (MRS) B.A. ART EDUCATION Music predominates and performs speci fic roles in the daily activities of Moro' a people. It integrates with almost all the cultural , aesthetic, political , economic social, psychological, emotional and physiological aspect of their lives. Music is not just seen as an enjoyable pursuit, it helps in the continuity of tradition, because all musical types played in all societies have tradition which governs its modes and performance. Therefore, the role of music is obvious in peoples lives, philosophers and other people have recognised and paid tribute to the potent influence of music and human ideals, emotions and behaviours. People use music to express their attitudes to life, their hopes, fears, thoughts and beliefs. The impact of music is generally seen and felt most, than any other art because it generates responses before the intended meaning is understood, it moves the mind and soul directly. The Moro'a a philosophy of l i f e i s always manifested in musical activities. Music is a constant companion in social activities both for expressing sorrow and kappines. Songs are used at all times and are seasonal. They are particularly used to mark the geographical variations of the year. Music has v i i i continued to play a prominent role in most of the cul tural ac tivi ties of the Moro'a people '• Unfor tunately, today, the si tuat ion has changed. Music i s no longer used as a means of teaching the young, correc tive measure in people 's wrong doing, knowing the past etc. These roles were fel t more be fore the coming of the Chri stian mi ssionaries. When they came , they adopted a hos ti le atti tude to African art , music and al l various forms of cul tural activi ties. Thei r atti tude s affec ted the nations cul ture particularly the Mo ro1a cul tural activi ties. Since then, ef fort s are being geared towards reviving the cul ture of the count ry by the Nigerian government . The Moro'a people too, have been working towards cul tural revival . One of the ways in which the society i s preserving Moro1 a cul ture i s that a day has been se t aside as an annual event for the celebration of Moro'a cul tural day. The day i s special ly kept and observed by everybody to bring to l i fe the peoples pas t. The purpose of thi s re search there fore, i s to investigate and document the various types of music and thei r role in Moro'a cul ture, the extent to which ix music has helped in boosting the activi ties of cul ture. I s' music s ti l l playing that role for which which i t i s known? Al so, the study wi l l investigate and document the various cul tural activi ties and to offer suggestions on the promotion and revived of these activi ties. There fore, information for the study was col lected from primary and secondary sources through personal interaction, observation of musicians pe rformed l i fe, recording of music types and photo graphs of performances taken. Al so information was col lected from two set of s tructured ques tionnai re and interview schedules wi th elders, those participating in various cul tural activi ties musicians and dancer s. Information col lected was analysed and reported in tabular form. Data i s presented in summary stati s tics, that i s pre senting the average response or the numbe r and percentage of persons choosing a particular re sponse di rec tly into the reproduction of the ques tionnai re. Cul tural activi ties are facing the ri sk of dying out i f proper steps are not taken to aver t the si tuation, importantly as they are. We learn about the past from them and so the need to preserve the skills, values and all our cultural activities is necessary.
