Abstract
This research is a critical edition, translation arid
commentary of the Irshad al-1 kiiwan ilg Ahkarri Khuru.i al-
Niswan (Guidance to brethrens on the rules concerning the
outing of women). This litrary work is one of the few works
of Sheikh Uthman b. Fodi on women activities. It discusses
conditions which allow women to go out of their homes. Some
of these conditions are:- Their going to the Mosque for the
five daily prayers; their going to the market; their outing
to ease themselves; their outing for marriage and naming
coremonies and other.
In order to support his views, the Sheikh had quo bed Qur’an,
Hadith and Fiqh books. However, the conditions discussed are by
no means exhustive, but they are the most important.
A closer study of the conditions shows that a woman is not
allowed to go out just because she wanted to satisfy any of the
above needs but when there is no body to assist. The exception may
be going out to ease her self, going to the Mosque for the
congregational daily prayers, search for knowledge, and
pilgrimage. However, at a closer observation, most of these
could be dispensed with. The case of prayers in the Mosque is
not all that important for, it is preferable for a woman to say
her prayers in her room than in the Mosque; on the issue of her
education, if her husband performed his role accordingly she may
not need to go out to search for knowledge; partaining to
pilgrimage, if an individual satisfies its conditions, it becomes
incumbent on him to p>sra it himself.
He cannot deligate some one to represent him except in
exceptional circumstances, A woman cannot travel to Makkh (for
pilgrimage) without her husband or a guardian who cannot legally
many her. The last case is when she wants to ease
herself, Al-hamdu Lillah, today most houses are equiped with
toilet facilities hence there is no reason for women to go out
for the purpose of easing themselves, and thus the unnecessary
movement of women is checked.
The reasons for restricting them are to create a society
free from immorality and other evils which are against social
stability.
It should be noted that the restriction is not akin to
imprisonment, women are free to
go out if they have sufficient
reasons. In fact, it is because they are allowed to go out that
these conditions are put before them. However, when they have to
go out they should do so fully dressed according to Islamic
injunctions.
This research work consists of five chapters. The first
