Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study intends to find out whether there are
cases of drug abuse and other related problems among
students in the selected secondary schools and the
psychiatric hospitals. The study sample is made up of
three groups of people: the students from the selected
schools, the principals and teachers from the same
selected schools where the students were drawn, and the
hospital personnel from the selected psychiatric hospitals
all in Kaduna Metropolis.
Three hundred and ninety-eight (398) students of
forms five and six made up 256 males and 42 females were
used. Their ages ranged from 15 years to 20 years. one
hundred and fifteen (115) staff members were used in the
study. The males numbered 73, while the females were 42.
The teachers were 113, the principals were seven, and the
vice-principals were five. Eighty-six (86) of them are
married, while the remaining 29 members in the group are
single. on the hospital personnel side, the males
numbered 11, and the females numbered five. Three
personnel in the group are medical doctors, one psychiatric
consultant, five psychiatric nurses, three principal
nursing officers and two senior community health assistants.
Two personnel in the group did not state their rank.
Eleven in the group are married while, the remaining five
personnel are single.
Data collection was by means of three sets of
questionnaires, namely: (a) the secondary school
students questionnaire; (b) the principals/teachers
questionnaire; and (c) the hospital personnel questionnaire.
The tables are analysed in percentages. The
staff members are selected because they are likely to
be directly involved in dealing with such cases of drug
abuse and other related cases of bad behaviour among
students in the selected schools, while on the other
hand the two hospitals are selected because they deal
with patients who have drug related problems and other
cases of mental illness.
The following findings were made:
1. There were cases or incidence of drug abuse and
other related problems among students in both
the selected schools and hospitals;
2. alcohol, marijuana and amphetamine were found
to be the most popular drugs among the students
as well as the ones commonly abused by the
students, while drugs like cocaine, barbiturates,
lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and heroin were
found to be less popular among the students and
therefore found to be less abused;
3. finally, the study revealed that the problem can
be reduced or prevented through balanced parenthood
without over indulgence or rejection by the
parents towards proper upbringing of the children.
It was found out that counselling those at
high risk - (teenagers) before they start
could help in minimizing the problem, and
so on.
