Abstract
Space utilization within the 80s in Ahmadu Bello University has
created the need to utilize the available resources at its disposal
effectively. This problem has given the awareness to the
administrators to understand the use pattern of the community
(students and staff).
To understand the use pattern, facilities both social and
academic were surveyed as reported in the master plan proposal
scheme. The report showed that the upsurge in the campus
population has demanded the need to make available those
facilities necessary to permit the good operation of the campus
system.
A multi-purpose auditorium complex is therefore proposed to
accommodate the social and academic requirements of the community
and to also operate as an autonomous institution where revenue
would be generated from the auxiliary facilities that would be
provided within the complex.
The introductory chapter shows the problem definition of the
thesis and also looked at the contributory part of the thesis which
is mainly theatre planning by understanding the intricate roofing
elements which directed the researcher to make a research into the
use of tensile structure. The research looks at the advantages,
problems form, structures, aesthetics, economy and the limitation of
tensile technology.
Chapter two has tried to show the contextual development of
theatre as an art both in Western and African idiom, and also to
understand how the next generation of designers would draw a hybrid
space between the western and the traditional theatre for a true
regional theatre architecture.
In chapter three various parameters to theatre planning were
analysed, this include the sight line, acoustics, acoustical
materials, space morphology etc., all these components have become
the guiding principle of the design.
The survey on recreational planning was analysed in chapter
four, to see how various factors of design come into play in the
execution of an effective recreational scheme. This looks at
recreation in A.B.U, and also made recommendations on some planning
defects.
The understanding of existing situation has brought in the
case study technique treated in chapter five. Local case studies
were analysed for a good planning system.
The technological aspects of the theatre's roof was treated in
this section (chapter six). This looks at problems, design, economy
and limitations of tensile technology.
Chapter seven presented the existing structures utilizing
cable technology, this has helped in understanding the caution to
be taken in designing one.
The need to understand the local conditions of the site is
necessary so that design would have to respect these local
conditions. Chapter eight has tried to show how the site local
vii
conditions were; these are, winds, temperature, humidity, sunshine
hours, rainfall etc.
The last chapter is a treatment of various design
approaches in architecture as applied to the thesis. This has
gone to conceptual planning level, concepts evolution and site
planning scheme
