Abstract
This investigation titled A Study of the Effectiveness
of the Islamic Techniques or Counselling is intended, to
achieve a number of purposes. For one thing the study is
intended to suggest how the mosque as an institution can
function better than it does now, through the provision of
organised counselling services.
To achieve this aim the commonest problems of the
Ummah and the Islamic based techniques were identified.
The effectiveness of these techniques were ascertained so
that in the end what comes out of the study is a program of
action which if practicalised in the mosque will assist in
the achievement of the main goals of counselling -
behaviour
change, promoting growth and enabling the individuals to
attain their maximum potentials.
The population for the study was the muslim population
in Zaria from where the sample was drawn through purposeful
means. The data were collected through two instruments
namely a questionnaire and an interview. Both instruments
proved useful to the investigator, bindings were made which
reveals many things, including the finding that command and
persuasion are the alternative techniques open to the
muslim counsellor. Another finding was that the use of
command or persuasion is usually determined by the type of
problem being treated.
Based on this and other findings a number of vital
conclusions were drawn including the conclusion that the problems
of the muslim Ummah often reflect the class of people dominant in
an
area and that interpretation is the most important activity
involved in using either command or persuation. Similarly
it was concluded that persuasions is more frequently used
as a technique than authoritative command. The study
therefore
recommended a number of measures that could be taken to
arrest the situation. It recommends, for instance, that even
though confession is not required in Islam, counseling
services still need to be formalised.
There are also a number of suggestions areas that A made on the
need to be further researched into - areas that are very much
related to the topic of this investigation. One such suggestion
is a replication of this study in the same setting but with a
larger sample.
