Abstract
This is a self evaluative study of the Bachelor
of Education (B.Ed), Christian Religious Studies Programme of
Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The programme was introduced
in the Department of Education, Faculty of Education, A.B.U.
Zaria in 1983. The intention of the study was to determine
through an empirically based study how far the programme has
met the set objectives. It established the strengths and
weaknesses of the programme in equipping the student-teachers
for their professional role as CRS teachers through Christian
principles and practice.
The respondents involved in the study were four
sub-groups -within the programme:1.
Current students
2. Teacher-educators
3. Graduates (products)
4. Employers of the products of the programme. .
Three instruments - questionnaire, oral interview and
observation were used for the study. Four null hypotheses were
proposed to help determine how far the set objectives were
achieved. Three of the hypotheses sought the respondents*
perception on the students'
i. academic and professional training needs
ii. programme planning ability needs
iii. teaching practice needs.
The fourth hypothesis explored the employers and
teacher-educators perception of the undergraduates professional
needs and skills.
The results of the study reflect the acceptance of the
first three hypotheses and the rejection of the fourth.
Oral interview and observations strengthened the
informative data obtained through questions in the questionnaires.
The findings show that:1.
There were only three full-time' teacher-educator engaged
by the section.
2. There was no teaching practice exposure for the students
3. Upto 52% of the students of the programme had indicated
their intention to leave teaching field soon after
graduation.
4. Teacher-Educators, Graduates of the programme share
same view on the academic professional needs and
skills of the student-teachers.
5. Teacher-Educators and Employers do not share the same
view on the professional training needs and skills of
the students.
6. Faculty of Education Library lacked sufficient current
teaching and learning resources for the students and
teacher-educators in the section.
Valuable conclusions were drawn from the findings
and the following recommendations were also made:(1)
More full-time teacher-educators should be engaged
(2) Workshops, seminars, and conferences in CRS should
be organised by the section.
(3) Incentives like merit awards should be encouraged
for both students and staff.
(4) Teaching practice should be introduced for all
categories of students in the section.
(5) C.R.S. Section in the Faculty of Education Library
should be equipped with enough teaching and learning
resources like journals, text-books, reference,
magazines and other related publications in the area.
