Abstract
In many of our Nigerian Urban centres, workers
face problems of long travel time and high cost of
travel in their worktrips.
The Study is aimed at examining the characteristics
of Journey to work in Makurdi, identify the problems
with a view to planning effectively for it.
Data was collected from Primary and Secondary Sources.
In Makurdi, Journey to work was found to be associated
with problems of high cost long travel time, inconveniences
and strains. The low income earners spend more
than 26% of their monthly income and travel for longer
distances than high income earners in their worktrips.
Less than 22% of the workers were observed to own
private vehicles (Cars, bicycle, motor-cycle, etc) of
their own. Unfortunately, the public transport system
is inefficient, overcrowded and their services are
not accessible to a large part of the Urban area.
These problems are due to the poor Urban growth with
respect to the distribution of residences and workplaces,
the poor roadnetwork and the present economic recession.
Forcasts of landuse and worktrips shows that these problems
may be worse by the year, 2005.
Proposals for achieving an effective journey to
work based on short term curative measures and long
term preventive measures were advanced. The short
term curative measures were directed at solving the
problems of existing flows. These include proposals
on improvement of road network, organising the
present public transport system and traffic management
schemes. The long term preventive measures include
proposals on distribution of residential areas and
workplaces to minimise distance and ease movement
to work, mass transit system, utilising the train
services by 2005, planning for pedestrians, motorcyclists
and organised parking system.
The proposals are expected to be implemented in
17 years. The phases of implementation are 1988-1990
(Short term), 1991-1995 and 1996-2005 for long term
proposals. There are also recommednations on sources
of finance and administrative framework for the
implementation.
It is hoped that if the Physical Planning solutions
advanced were implemented, the problems of journey to
work in Makurdi would be solved.
