Abstract
The study examined the relationship between demographic factors and lifestyles of the people of Kaduna State. The lifestyle factors of smoking, alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, nutritional habit, drug habit and sexual behaviour constitute the dependent variables. While the demographic characteristics of age, gender, location, socio-economic status, religion, marital and educational status constitute the independent variables. Ex-post facto research design with a 7 x 6 non-experimental factorial subdesign was used. The design afforded the researcher opportunity to juxtapose two or more independent variables in order to study their relationship on the dependent variables. Stratified and cluster random sampling techniques were used to select samples for the study. A total of 1350 randomly selected respondents were used for the study. A questionnaire, which consists of 55 items on the practice of lifestyle factors, developed by the researcher and pilot tested was used for the study, using Goffman split-half model, a reliability analysis scale of 0.9181 was obtained. The data collected were statistically analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics. All the three (3) main hypotheses and six (6) sub-hypotheses were subjected to appropriate statistical analysis. The following results among others shown that: (1) Age of the respondents is significantly related to smoking and drug habits in Kaduna State. (2) Socio-economic status is significantly related to alcoholic lifestyle, nutritional habits, drug habits and sexual behaviour of the respondents. 8 (3) Health problems suffered by the people of Kaduna State are significantly related to their lifestyles. (4) Rural and urban people in Kaduna State are significantly different in their lifestyles. Based on the findings of the study the following recommendations among others were made: 1. Since the lifestyle exhibited by an individual does not spring up in a day, health education of children and youths (especially adolescents) should be intensified in the primary and secondary schools in order to make them appreciate the adverse effects of alcohol, drug abuse, smoking, inactivity and indiscriminate sexual behaviour. 2. Kaduna state government should make provisions for more recreational facilities for the promotion and maintenance of positive lifestyles for the people of the state. The communities should also be encouraged to do the same.
