Abstract
ABSTRACT
This thesis is about the position of women in
Borno society, and the various roles they played
therein from C.1750 to C.1893. The first Chapter
starts with establishing the necessity of such a
research and examining the many perspectives within
which the position of women in society can be studied.
Because of the existence of many theoretical
Possibilities for such a research, the Chapter attempted
a critique of the three main ones and why one of them,
historical materialism is accepted by the researcher
as the method of this investigation.
Consequently, Chapter Two undertakes an
examination of economic production and the appropriation
of surplus in Borno, with a view to establishing
property and class relations in the system. It was
found out that this activity and the appropriation of
peasant surplus produce formed the bedrock of the
state. Then Chapter Three, drawing from the previous
chapter tried to establish the class structure of the
society and the position of women in that structure.
It turned out that women just like men were divided
into the various classes which existed in that society.
Chapter Four undertakes an overview of women in
a field exclusive to them, domestic labour. Here, is
explored the role women played in the reproduction of
the human species.
The last part of this chapter concludes the
thesis by drawing together all the conclusions reached
on the nature of the Borno an society, and the double
edged oppression women experienced.
