Abstract
The aim of this independent study was to dove
develop materials for an adult-target-population living
in urban areas of Kaduna State. The work has been
motivated by the realization of the fact that majority
of working youths and adult illiterate, semi literate
and primary school and secondary school leavers and
drop-outs living in urban areas experience problems in
coping with the increasing demands of urban life.
To get the right perspective of the problem of
Adult and non-formal education in Nigeria and other
countries, related literature in Adult and non- formal
education in Nigeria and other countries was reviewed.
And the review has provided the background for the
project.
To develop materials for Adult Education, the
needs, problems, and aspiration of the adult learners
must be identified. For this reason, a report on
Curriculum Workshop in Social Studies was used as the
resource supporting data:
From preliminary discussions and interview an
opportunity sample of one hundred (male) has been
selected from six urban areas in Kdauna State. A
questionaire was designed containing five major items,
viz (i) background information fage., marital status,
total number of children, number of children
in school, place of birth, residence and school
attended); (ii', Occupation (type of work, place of
work, experience, condition of service and job
improvement opportunities), (iii) using social
services, (the bank, insurance, hospital, mass media)
(iv) communication (mass media) and (v) Socio-economy
(owning a house, rented house, business, equipment/
tools, means of transport, access to loan, financial
assistance, income, etc).
One hundred people (males) responded to the
questionaire and the results were used as resource-
supporting data for developing materials in Chapter
four. For instance, it was shown that majority of the
population (respondents of the questionnaire) did not
make proper use of social services and have a common
problem of a poor educational background - below
secondary school level, mostly, semi literate and
primary school leavers and drop-outs. (58%) fifty eight
percent.
While about fifty six percent of the population
wanted to get a chance to continue with their education
or get some training, others, about thirty percent only
wanted to know how to get financial assistance or
capital, to establish their business or trade. The
remaining fourteen percent thought they did not even
know what to do or how to improve their
lives (living condition)
Using the reviews as the background, materials have
been developed, in Chapter four, based on the
identified needs, problems and aspirations of the
target population. The work ended with discussions- a
short summary and conclusions of the work and, a
recommendation for further action in developing more
social studies materials, to cover more aspects of
Adult and Continuing Education, within Community level,
