Abstract
The study investigates the disciplinary problems in secondary
schools in Sokoto State. The purposes of the study were to examine
the factors responsible for disciplinary problems prevalent in
secondary schools in the Slate, to highlight the nature and causes of
indiscipline and, to seek for measures of minimizing indiscipline
among secondary school students. Four main hypotheses were set to
guide the study. Relevant literature was reviewed in respect of the
issues of the study viz a viz factors that constitute students’ bad
behavior, causes of indiscipline among students, attitude of
students and teachers towards discipline and the role of principals
and teachers in the maintenance of discipline. The sample for the
study included 35 principals, 275 teachers, 379 students and 177
parents. The main instrument of the study was a 45 - item
questionnaire. This was supported by interview schedule to elicit
more information from the subjects of the study. The Likert type 4
- point rating scale was employed to rale the respondent’s opinions
in respect of the items on the instrument. Frequencies, percentages,
and mean scores were used to enrich the discussion of the data.
Cor-relational studies, chi square, One Way Analysis of Variance
and T-test statistics were employed in testing the hypotheses. The
main findings of the study reveal that: the twenty most serious acts
cheating; factors which constitute good behaviour were punctuality
at all times, obedience to school rules, and paying attention to
school work. It was also revealed that poor teacher - student
relationship and moral laxity among staff are part of the problems
that are responsible for bad behaviour among students. Teachers
were found, as a distinct group, to constitute a bad influence on
students for students see them as role models to copy. In order to
curb indiscipline in schools, the respondents agreed that the
following measures could be taken: organizing definite programme
of activities for students, all adults around students should develop
positive attitude towards discipline and, the Ministry of Education
should appoint qualified and morally sound principals and teachers
to head and leach in the schools. In conclusion, schools should do
away with ineffective and old methods of maintaining discipline
such as corporal and physical punishment and employ modern
approaches which embrace counseling students.
