In 1907 the Shehu who is both a political and a religious leader of the empire came to Maiduguri (now Maiduguri Village) remains a small town on the northeastern outskirts of the capital city. Prior to the coming of the British, the only outside influence on this large empire had come across the Sahara by camel-borne trade and Koranic scholars.
