Abstract
Action is the starting point in business and every human activity, what an individual accomplishes depends to a large extent on how much, and on why, he wants to act. At the early years of this century, most theories about the motivation of workers were dominated by the human relations view point. It is today's best known most widely practiced and malpractice theory of why beople behave the way they do and how they ought to be treated by management. Several years ago, C. Agyris (1964) outlined the basic conflict between the demands of the healthy human personality and the requirements of the organisation. His emphasis was on personality versus organisation; and except for a few scientists and top decision makers, it was clearly in the nature of the organisation to stunt the personality of those it employed and self-fulfilment. Today, employee motivation is a major concern of most managers. Heavy regards is paid on how employees can be induced to see organisational goals as part of their goals set, and work hard to achieve them. Motivation is a cyclical process affecting the inner needs or drives that energise, channel, and maintain behaviour. The motivation process begins with inner drives and needs that motivate the individual to work toward certain goals, which the individual has chosen in the belief that they will satisfy the inner drives and needs. After attaining this goals, the individual consciously or unconsciously judges whether the effort has been worthwhile. To the extent that the individual percieves the effort as rewarding, the behaviour of making the effort is re-inforced and the individual will continue or repeat that kind of behaviour. Re-lnforcement or what happens as a result of behaviours, affects other needs and drives as the process is repeated, hence its cyclical nature. It is against this background that the topic "The application of motivation theories in managing Nigerian Business Enterprises (A Case study of Taraku Mills Limited)" is considered very important for our research purpose. In order to address this issue, we have explored the various concepts and theories of motivation in detailed including the Needs theory, the Two-Factor theory, the Expectancy theory, the Equity theory, the Carrot and Stick theory and Theories X and Y. The applicability of these theories as they affect the Nigerian business enterprises was tested using Taraku Mills Limited in Benue state as an analytical base. A conclusion has been reached having regards to the degree of coverage of the application of motivation theories in Nigerian business enterprises.
