EFFECTS OF POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT COUNSELLING TECHNIQUE ON PROCRASTINATION AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SHIRA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BAUCHI STATE

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of positive reinforcement counselling technique on procrastination among secondary school students in Shira local government area of Bauchi state. A quasi experimental design involving pre-test post test was used in the study. Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting two intact classes with thirty students each out of the population of five senior secondary schools. Secondary Students Procrastination Inventory (SSPI) was used in collecting the data from the respondents. The treatment group was exposed to the treatment programme for the six weeks while the control group received no treatment. Data collected for the study were analyzed using t-test statistics. Three research questions and hypotheses which seek to find out the differences in procrastination of treatment and control groups based on gender and age were raised and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Findings showed that, significant difference existed between secondary school students exposed to positive reinforcement counselling technique and the control group (t = 3.149, p = .004 ); gender difference does not make any significant effect on procrastination among secondary school students in Shira local government area of Bauchi state (t = 1.208, p = .237); age differences did not make any significant effect in exhibiting procrastination among secondary school students in the treatment group (t = 1.948, p = .062). Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made: Positive Reinforcement Counselling Technique has been found effective in addressing procrastination of secondary school students, and therefore should be applied to all students irrespective of gender and age. All schools should have counselling centres adequately manned by qualified counsellors or paracounsellors that will help in reducing or minimizing procrastination among students.
