Abstract
ABSTRACT
The poor performance in public examinations by students
of secondary schools in Okene Local Government Area (Kogi
State) and the allegations that principals were responsible
have been matters of social and academic concern.
It was against this background that the research on the
instructional leadership role performance of the principals in
Okene Local Government Area was undertaken. It aimed at
examining how well the principals of schools in the locality
perform their instructional leadership role. To offer a
comprehensive write-up, issues that could militate against the
effective performance of this role of the principals, were
examined.
All the 23 principals of schools in Okene under the Kogi
Teaching Service Board as well as a randomly selected 207
teachers from a population of 439 teachers formed the
respondents. The teachers had served for at least two years
under the principals.
The questionnaire was drawn using Likert scale of
measuring social behaviour. The principals were expected to
rate themselves on the scale on how they
vii
perform their instructional leadership role, and the
problems that affect such role performance. The
teachers were to rate their respective principals on
how they see them perform those aspects of
instructional leadership and also rate the extent to
which some factors affect the performance of the
instructional leadership role by their principals.
A total of nine hypotheses were drawn to test
whether there was a significant difference in the views
of the principals and those of teachers on the aspects
of instructional leadership role and some extraneous
factors that affect the performance of the instructional
leadership role by principals, percentage was used to
analyse the demographic information while the T-test was
used for hypotheses testing.
The analysis suggested that principals did not
adequately motivate teachers and supervise instruction
in their schools. However, it was noted that principals
tried to provide facilities for teaching, sponsor inservice
programmes for staff and solicit parents support
to improve instruction, it was equally noted that
parents’ inability to provide books for ward(s);
inadequate facilities from
viii
government, lack of autonomy for school principals
and abrupt changes in the school calendar militated
i
against the instructional leadership role performance of
principals.
Based on the findings, recommendations were made
as possible solutions to usher in some improvements of
principals’ performance in schools.
it was recommended that the neglect of supervision of
instruction in the schools by principals should be a topic
for further research.
